Aquatic Milkweed is an often overlooked beauty in native flora. The white, light pink flower clusters bloom in late spring and summer and have a delicate, lacy appearance. As the name suggests, Aquatic Milkweed prefers wet, rich soil and can be found in wetlands and swamps throughout the Southeastern United States.
Monarch, Queen, and Soldier butterflies all use Aquatic Milkweed as a larval host plant. Look for small yellow eggs and striped caterpillars on leaves and stems. Aquatic Milkweed will also attract butterflies and other insects to nectar when blooming. Aquatic Milkweed will make a lovely addition to a native wildflower garden.
